2026 Week 04 - Weekly Update

If you have questions about any of these action items, please schedule a quick zoom meeting with a member of the Steering Committee here.

Recap

January 1st General Meeting - Happy New Year!

We held our first General Meeting of 2026 on New Year’s Day.

2026 Steering Committee Elected

Congratulations to the 2026 Steering Committee!

Thank you to everyone who submitted and accepted nominations. And special thank you to our Elections Committee for handling everything: @Tanner @Robert_H @Joanna !!

Steering Committee Communication

We voted to use Discourse Hub app (the forum app) for Steering Committee communication. This keeps everything transparent since anyone can join and view the chat history, but also allows the Steering Committee to have a central place to coordinate meetings.

If you haven’t already, download the Discourse Hub app. We will have instructions on how to set it up properly so notifications are enabled shortly.

Tenant Union Campaign Renewed

The Tenant Union was renewed as our Focus Campaign for another 6 months (through June 2026). Key strategic shifts discussed:

  • Larger buildings: Expanding our target to include buildings with 21-40 units. Larger buildings give us better odds of finding motivated tenants and allow for “setting up shop” in common areas. These have been the most successful tactics so far.
  • Educational materials: We need to spread our message more broadly - hanging flyers, tabling in front of buildings, and providing materials tenants can explore on their own. Also breaking down our handbook into shareable materials may be beneficial.
  • Retaliation flyer: Finalize the Civil Code 1942.5 flyer with specific court case examples. We can examine doing the same with similar legislation (rent increase limits, eviction timelines, etc.).

Solidarity Committee Collaboration

We voted to:

  • Send an email blast to our list asking people to volunteer at the CCIB. And also continue to help with recruitment, training, and outreach.
  • Schedule a joint community forum with the Solidarity Committee

Active Tasks

Canvassing Script

We’re finalizing a script for door-to-door conversations.

Retaliation Flyer (Civil Code 1942.5)

One of our biggest obstacles is tenant fear of retaliation. We need a one-page flyer explaining legal protections, including specific court cases where tenants were protected.

Database Development

Continuing work on reconciling county tax parcel data with state corporation data to identify building owners.

Info Template

Testing a standardized input template for tracking tenant association information.

Action Items

  • Complete canvassing script with AEIOU prompts and fallback lines
  • Finalize retaliation flyer with court case examples
  • Schedule Tenant Union Reading Group for last week of January
  • Reconcile County/State property data and submit PRA for “Statement of Information”

Side-Quests

BDS in the Central Valley

Status: Active. Analyzing PRA responses and developing strategy.

Thread: Side-Quest Proposal - BDS in the Central Valley

Next Steps:

  • Submit PRA request for San Joaquin County
  • Finish Stockton investment analysis
  • Research Port of Stockton commissioners (“Know Your Commissioners” series maybe?)
  • Build California Divestment Tracker since a few other areas are working on this with us now

Know Your Rights / Rapid Response

Status: Revamping. Focus on canvassing and training materials.

Thread: Side Quest: July 6 Know Your Rights & Extended Rapid Response

Next Steps:

  • Create guides for legal documentation (Power of Attorney, emergency contacts)
  • Develop detention guide for Stockton area
  • Reach out about monthly legal clinic

Living Wage for LUSD

Status: Paused.

Thread: Side-Quest: LivingWageforLUSD Campaign

Next Steps:

  • If there are other LUSD members who might want to carry on, we can see if they want to continue this.

Starbucks Unionizing Support

Status: Active. Preparing support materials.

Next Steps:

  • Publish formal statement of support
  • Create online boycott/support pledge form
  • Distribute Starbucks United flyers to local stores

Research & Education

Voices of the Working Class (Articles)

Flock Cameras / Surveillance Critique

Discussed at the meeting. People want to write about how expensive surveillance tech fails to prevent crime while essential services remain underfunded. People aren’t aware of what Flock cameras do or that they’re bad.

Why Liberals Lose

Still in progress or paused? There are several different directions to take this, but at this point, I think it is no longer an org wide effort.

Organizing Toolkits

Introducing Coworkers to the Union

ICE Raid Preparedness Training at Work

Internal & Infrastructure

Steering Committee Administrative Backlog

The new Steering Committee has a backlog of administrative tasks to work through:

Compliance:

  • Tax filings (Form 3500 priority!)
  • Conflict of Interest forms
  • 501c4 paperwork

Membership:

  • Remove non-dues-paying members from platforms and switch over steering

Governance:

  • Set regular SC meeting schedule (proposal: 2 weeks after general meeting)
  • Bylaw review

Tech:

  • Fix Google Calendar sync on website
  • Move forum to Coolify
