Tenant Union

Direct Tenant Union Outreach

Tenant Union work is a core pillar of WCU’s work. But a tenant union’s power is not built off of words alone; it is build through shared struggle and concrete wins.

We have several opportunities right now to put this principle into practice. We are in contact with tenants who are being ignored and being denied the dignity of a safe and well maintained home. Our task is to help them break out of isolated struggle and build their collective strength.

Select times you are available, help connect tenants together, and show them they are not alone in their fights!

Action Items

Tenant Union Canvassing Script
We are drafting a script for initiating conversations and collecting contact information. @ckposadas and @SeanHun are already working on a draft - leave edits/comments in the thread or Google Doc: Creating Canvassing Script

Creating a flyer for Civil Code § 1942.5 - Protecting tenants from landlord retaliation
One of the main push backs we get from tenants is fear of landlord retaliation if they file a complaint. However, they have some level of protection in the form of Civil Code § 1942.5. However, we need that information condensed to a one-page flyer. You can start working on it here.

Know Your Rights

Events

Know Your Rights Forum: Sunday Sept 14, 4:00-5:30PM (RSVP Here - English / Spanish)

Action Items

KYR Rapid Response Onboarding and Video Scripts
While we wait for @chima to get everything online :grimacing: … we can still prepare the following. If ICE does ramp up activity in San Joaquin County, it would be good if we had onboarding together so it is easier to plug people into our Rapid Response system / safely interact with ICE. See more details about that here.

If you would like to work on the above, please fill out this Rallly link: Rallly.WCU. We’re aiming to meet sometime between Sept 15 - 21.

Workplace Organizing

Organizing Toolkit: Introducing Coworkers to the Union

The goal of this toolkit is to help explain the basics of a union to coworkers for workers trying to organize their workplace. You can see our current progress, or continue working on this on your own, by going here.

Events

We are scheduling a day to work on this between Sept 15-21 as a group. Please fill this Rallly.WCU out with your availability so we can schedule a time.

Organizing Toolkit: Winning ICE Raid Preparedness Training at Work

The goal of this toolkit is to help connect potential organizers with WCU so we can get them started with a (potentially) simple demand: training on how to respond to an ICE raid at work. You can check it out here.

We voted not to make this public yet, but it’s available for members to share with people they know directly.

BDS in the Central Valley

PRA Requests for BDS Investment Information

Using the examples of Hayward and Richmond California, we should figure out exactly what we need record requests for to send into every town in San Joaquin County (and make that template available for others). See more details and how to get started working on it here.

Port of Stockton BDS Messaging

The second phase of this is to look into who is on the Port of Stockton Commission and develop messaging around them that connects their local oligarch status to our labor and union work. If you would like to get started ahead of time, please use this Google Doc.

Events

  • BDS Research Meeting: Thursday Sept 11 @ 10:15PM - 11:15PM (Calendar)
  • We are also scheduling a day to work on this between Sept 22-28 as a group. Please fill this out Rallly.WCU with your availability so we can schedule a time.

Again, if you have questions about any of these action items, please schedule a quick zoom meeting with a member of the Steering Committee here. We were elected to help Members achieve the goals they voted for, so please don’t hesitate to book a meeting!
