Working Class Unity Articles

WCU Articles

Objectives

The aim of these articles is to address issues significant to Working Class Unity’s organizing efforts, matters important to our Membership, or topics that warrant discussion. We should focus on issues that are either overlooked or underrepresented in the broader left discourse, allowing WCU to offer a unique perspective or contribute meaningfully to leftist discussions.

These articles will be voted on by the General Membership and will reflect WCU’s views at the time of publication. Therefore, it is crucial to involve as many members as possible in this process.

Publication Timeline

As discussed in our last meeting, here are the timelines for five articles we plan to publish:

  • September - December: Article 1
  • January - March: Article 2
  • April - June: Article 3
  • July - September: Article 4
  • October - December: Article 5

Brainstorming

During the previous General Meeting, members suggested the following topics:

  • Nakba Day
  • Working class history
  • Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Living New Deal
  • Issues with NGOs
  • Occupation of Alcatraz
  • Indigenous issues
  • Local history and its connection to modern issues
  • Farmworkers and the Bracero Program
  • Communicating with non-leftists about issues
  • Failures of progressive education reform

Suggestions and Voting

Please continue to leave your suggestions in this thread, including your preferred time slot. Provide a description so others can better understand what you wish to discuss in the article. Once everyone has had the opportunity to contribute, we will hold a vote to decide on the first topic and go from there.

General Outline of the Process

Month 1

  • Create a Forum Thread: Centralize discussion as soon as a topic is decided.
  • Meetings: Meet as needed to draft an article outline. If there are opposing views, incorporate them into a single outline or create separate outlines.
  • Member Participation: All members should engage in discussions during this phase.

Month 2

  • Outline Presentation: Present the outline at the General Meeting. Membership can approve the outline with/without edits. If major disagreements arise, then Membership should decide whether to hold additional meetings to refine the outline and adjust the publication timeline if necessary.
  • Article Writing: Begin writing the article. Keep the Membership updated through the forum thread and include updates in the Weekly Update.
  • Feedback Period: Aim to complete the article about a week before the next General Meeting to allow time for feedback. But until we consistently meet deadlines, we will not set a strict deadline.

Month 3

  • Final Presentation: Present the final article to the membership at the next General Meeting. The article should be read in full and voted on. If approved, publish the article online that month.
  • Workshop Decision: Membership should decide if we should hold a workshop to present the article’s information to the public. Details of the workshop should be finalized at this General Meeting. Aim should be to present the workshop in 1-2 months so it does not overlap too much with the next article process.
