As we discussed in our previous meetings, we strongly encourage continuous participation in the Reading Group throughout the month. If you can start reading ahead of time, please consider sharing your thoughts and insights in this thread, even if you have not finished the entire article. Moreover, we invite all Members to engage in the discussion, regardless of whether or not you plan to do the reading.
The author also has more detailed breakdowns of each part of an organizing conversation. If you have free time and would like to help create an educational module based on this reading, please contact @HipGnosis.
Edited the original post to include audio versions of the reading and the calendar link. I forgot to select a speaker for the additional reading so it defaulted to a British guy, my bad.
I can’t attend but I want to submit two questions:
If we want the CalVilla TA to get off the ground, we actually need to teach AEIOU to tenants there. Outside of going through a reading like this, how might we pass on these techniques so they can organize without us?
Do we need to apply these skills during the No Votes for Genocide campaign as well? According to this reading, is jumping right in with Palestine the right way to go when talking to voters? Or should we build up to that somehow? Do we have to reconfigure AEIOU to fit a demand being made during election season or reconfigure our demand to fit the AEIOU model?
Hi all, I went ahead and worked on making a little summary of some of the things discussed in the reading group. It was me and @HipGnosis in attendance.
One topic we discussed related to this reading is more related to the concern of limited engagement to the reading group tonight, and if that it may be due to the reading and there being a lack of interest in the topic. Please feel free to share your thoughts and if this might be the case?
Moving into the reading: we didn’t get through all the sections but we did get to talk about setting up 1:1 meetings.
Setting up a 1-on-1
We talked about this section of the reading, and discussed how it might be beneficial to implement this technique in opportunities with the community prior to someone being interested in WCU. However, there can be varying ranges of difficulty depending on the type of person you talk to.
We also talked about the topics and questions mentioned by @chima and if these skills should be applied to our TU and No Votes for Genocide campaigns. In thinking about the topic of this month’s reading, as well as thinking about the questions posed by Harpreet, we started to brainstorm if creating a WCU “Campaign” video showing and demonstrating our version of he AEIOU but as a method to encourage people to join our org.
Separately but related to the reading, we also started to discuss where people generally get their theory and media from, as a chance to see what format is more useful, as well as to understand what helps entice people to support a cause, theory, etc., that makes it convincing/not convincing for them to support that.
PLEASE COME TO THE NEXT GEN MTG READY WITH A READING GROUP SUGGESTION PLEASE <3
